As part of the B.Ed curriculum, our department emphasized the integration of digital tools in teaching–learning processes to make social science learning more engaging and student-centred. In this context, I prepared a digital album on the Harappan Civilisation, one of the earliest and most advanced ancient civilisations of the world. The activity aimed to combine historical content with digital creativity, thereby enhancing both subject knowledge and technological skills.
The digital album was designed to present the major aspects of the Harappan Civilisation in a visually appealing and well-organised manner. It included sections on the discovery of the civilisation, major sites such as Harappa, Mohenjo-daro, and Lothal, town planning, drainage system, economic activities, art and craft, religious beliefs, and script. Each page contained concise text supported by images, maps, illustrations and captions, making the content easy to understand for upper primary and secondary level learners.
Special attention was given to the unique features of Harappan town planning, such as the grid pattern of roads, advanced drainage system, well-planned houses and public structures like the Great Bath. These features were highlighted through diagrams and comparative visuals in the album, helping learners appreciate the scientific and civic sense of the Harappans. The album also showcased seals, pottery, beads and toys to reflect the cultural and economic life of the people.
The preparation of the digital album promoted active learning and creativity. It encouraged self-learning, content organisation, and critical thinking while selecting and arranging historical information. From a pedagogical perspective, the album can be effectively used as a digital teaching aid, a revision tool, or as part of project-based learning in social science classrooms.
In conclusion, the digital album on the Harappan Civilisation proved to be an innovative and effective e-content resource developed as part of the B.Ed curriculum. It demonstrated how digital tools can enrich history teaching, make abstract concepts concrete, and increase learner interest. Such digital initiatives play a vital role in preparing future teachers to meet the demands of technology-integrated education.
